Best of American Lit

oh man, i have learned so much this year. the main thing i have learned is that i love Dr. P. He is my alltime favorite teacher i have ever had. back to the curriculum portion, ive learned about colonial literature, modern literature, post modern literature... the list goes on and on. my favorite portion of what weve learned is the post modern, most recent part. not only do i undestand the topic, but i enjoy reading the post modern works of literature.

JOHNNY CYBERPUNK

Alright. so i read this story, understood it. but didnt really get the point of it. I mean its post modern because of all kinds of things. Back then girls didnt dress like that, all leather, very dominant, boy like. People didnt have implanted sunglasses on their face, the didnt have devises in their brain that were controlled by someone else. This story is kind of weird, kind of like the tralfalmadorian part of Slaughterhouse 5.

My Slaughterhouse

The Book Slaughterhouse Five is an awesome example of post modernism. Vonnegut has random, reocurring, moments in this novel where he travels through time, so to speak. There are hundreds of examples of the five components of what post modernism stands for. Before I read this book, I hadn't quite fully grasped the concept of post modernism, and what it actually ment. After reading most of this novel, i feel like i hadve a completely new understand and grasp of post modernism, and what it tries to portray.
Throught this novel, Vonnegut travels through time, in a way, and re-lives his life. He goes from his time in the war, to his daughter all grown up and getting married, to his time he got abducted by Tralfalmadorians and sent to their planet out in space. What is cool about his writing techniques is that he doesnt ever let the reader know, or give them any heads up, of when he goes in and out of this time periods. He just randomly switches and makes the reader think, and come away from the book, with a different persective than the person next to them. That right there is an awesome example of breaking the chronological order rule, or theory. Who says books, and life, has to go in the correct order. Your brain doesnt have to have everything dumbed down for it to recognize and understand what is going on around it.
Another aspect of post modernism Vonnegut uses in this book is breaking the fourth wall. Which means the writer talks directly to the reader in a time where it is not meant to happen in. Theres a time in the book, when he is talking about something, i dont quite remember, and he randomly says, "It is me, it is I, the writer of this book." Which when you are in the moment, and reading the page, and you randomly get a curveball thrown at you, you dont know what just happened. That moment right there is the reasoning behind Vonnegut writing this book. Not all post modernism made sense, especially in the era which it was created in. That was the point! Authors didnt write these books so they could be thrown on another bookshelf at some random bookstore to be picked up once or twice in its lifespan. NO. They wrote these books to make readers think, fall in love, bring something to the table that has never been done before. THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT IN POST MODERNISM.

Post Modernism Rough Draft with Kyle Stickler

Since Kyle, Roman and i were under the impression that the project Ashlie had assigned was not due til Friday, we hadnt had enough time to make our project amazing. Here is a clip from Fresh Prince of Bel-air. To us, this is a perfect example of post modernism-breaking the fourth wall. We plan on hacking this project and give examples of tv shows that give all 5 components of post modernism.

Last Hurrah!

i honestly loved the way class went today. i actually felt like Dr. preston gave a damn about us, which he always makes me feel that way. i absolutely am in love with the fact that he is letting us create our own project, and give ourself the timeline and due dates and everything! i loved the idea Amanda gave about the video. that honesly was my favorite topic of the day. I really do think it will be so awesome if we all made a little video or snippet of ourselves, and what people dont see from us on a daily basis. It will prove to all the staff, and our classmates, that we arent just another student in a desk and we are human. We do atually care about something and we put interest and effort into the things we care about most. Just because we dont care about reading, or the quadratic formula doesnt mean we are lousy people and only care about our cell phones and social media sites. I am so excited to get started on this project and see what everyone comes up with in the next couple of days.

Ezra's Life

Ezra Pound was born in Hailey, Idaho in 1885. He was the child of Homer Loomis Pound and Isabel Pound. His father worked as a Federal Land Officer, and eventually had moved his family to Philly due to him recieving a job at the U.S Mint. He had a pretty normal childhood, playing outside while his two parents happily watched. Witht the support of his parents, the age of 15 is when Ezra decided he was going to be a poet.  He went to a military school for half of his high school career, then finished it at a local public school nearby. Pound went to the University of Pennsylvania, later transfered to the Hamilton College in Clinton, recieving a bachelor's degree in philosophy. After moving abroad, he had a daughter with violinist Olga Rudge, and the following year had a son with wife Dorothy. Pound's most famous work, The Cantos was seperated int many different works. Most of which noticed after his death in 1972. He published over 70 books, and helped with 70 others and wrote over 1500 articles in his lifetime.

My Question, Not Really Pressing Because I Could Care Less To Be Honest

Alright, so this "Pressing Question," i am supposed to have is kind of a question that i am sure everyone is gunna ask once they have read a tiny bit about this loon. Why in the world is he such a good writer, if the way he thinks and acts is crazy. He heils Hitler, and is one of his little minions, yet his poems are pretty awesome. Like this dude is almost bipolar in a way. I guess the answer to this question is that most writers are bipolar in some way or another. I guess not him so much, but a lot of writers write about their life, or their feelings. Pound kind of writes in that way, but he writes more about images and what he sees than what he really feels. Im guessing that is more of my answer. He could sit in a park and write a million short poems, each more moving than the next, but yet that is not his intention. Like Cory had said in class the other day, many artists write just to write. Many people think there is more meaning then is really on the page. People always have to find meanings for everything, they cant just read something and go on. I think that is why Pound IS such a good poet. He just writes, and doesnt really think anything of it. Im sure there are some poems that he is really passionate about, but reading a lot of his material, he just writes becasue he was either bored on some sort of drug. haha im so funny.

Unleash the Demons

Heather: i actually really like the way Ezra writes. He does make me visualize what he is talking about, and/or looking at as he is writing this. When he talks about the black panther and the white girl, it robs everything else around him of color. To me, it makes me think of how dominant the black and white are. The fact that he used "panther" and "leopard" as animals is like a rough soft touch. Both of these animals are cute and cuddly but very visious. They are beautiful animalss but you cant trust them. Saying that the white girl is coming down from the tree, makes me foreshadow and wonder what the animals will or wont do.

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/heather-5/

A Ballad of a Mulberry Road: i really like this poem. The first verse talks solomly of the young pretty girl. He really describes the way she does things. Her hair, how its on the left side of her head with a headpiece. The way he makes the reader imagine what the basket looks like, and how she holds it on her shoulders. The second verse talks more about what she looks like. The color of her skirts, her earrings, and the way she makes the boys look at her. By this poem, you can tell she is very attractive and makes heads turn. Not one time did he say anything about that in this poem. Yet the way he describes everything, you get that understanding.

Ezra on the Strike: this poem is one of those autobiography poems. He is writing about his strike and the United States portion of his life. He really does describe about Thanksgiving coming soon, and the days and nights getting colder, coal getting cheaper and turkeys more expensive.

La Descriptiones De Imaginista

Imagist Description: http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/5658

Nicotine: ..."So thou my mist-enwreathéd queen,
Nicotine, white Nicotine,
Riding engloried in they hair
Mak'st by-road of our dreams
Thy thorough-fare."
Este poema es un gran ejemplo de imaginism. Se da gran descripción de lo que Ezra estaba tratando de retratar.

Salutation:... "I have seen fishermen picnicking in the sun,
I have seen them with untidy families,
I have seen their smiles full of teeth
and heard ungainly laughter."
Este poema saludo realmente le da una buena descripción de lo que Ezra había visto. Él quiere que el lector vea lo que ve.

A Virginal: ..."Soft as spring wind that's come from birchen bowers.
Green come the shoots, aye April in the branches..."
Ezra siente vientos suaves, y trata de explicar a lo largo de ver verde a su alrededor. El uso de las metáforas como lo hace, por lo que usted visualiza los árboles en la primavera.

A Girl: ..."The tree has entered my hands,
The sap has ascended my arms,
The tree has grown in my breast -
Downward,
The branches grow out of me, like arms."
Esto es realmente peom givng una gran descripción de la ezra árbol está en. Hablando de la savia y las ramas como brazos realmente te da la descripción visual que necesita.

Heather: ..."The milk-white girls
Unbend from the holly-trees,
And their snow-white leopard
Watches to follow our trace."
La lectura de este poema realmente me hizo imaginar a una niña blanca que baja de un árbol. Esto realmente me hizo imaginar una nieve blanca leopardo al acecho esperando a la chica

Author's Credo

"The Image is more than an idea. It is a vortex or cluster of fused ideas and is endowed with energy."
Read more at http://www.ranker.com/list/a-list-of-famous-ezra-pound-quotes/reference#FxdJMUMU0tZCaF1A.99

The words "vortex," and "cluster," already are painting a picture in my head. "Fused ideas," are making me think of ideas put together, almost bonded together. This quote is totally perfect for him. I mean he was an imagist who painted pictures using words for his readers. Imagists take ideas and pictures and describe them, using words. They write poems in which using every detail of what they are descibing. The paint you pictures in your head t "imagine" what they are talking about. Every little detail counts, and you need to see what they see right down to the itty bitty minor details.

Before Sleep: ..."You were gone up as a rocket,
Bending your passages from right to left and from left to right
In the flat projection of a spiral."
http://allpoetry.com/poem/8501905-Before_Sleep-by-Ezra_Pound

The Bathtub: ..."As a bathtub lined with white porcelain,
When the hot water gives out or goes tepid,
So is the slow cooling of our chivalrous passion,
O my much praised but-not-altogether-satisfactory lady."
http://allpoetry.com/poem/8501923-The_Bath-Tub-by-Ezra_Pound

Nicotine: ..."As were Godiva's coming fated
And all the April's blush belated
Were lain before her, carpeting
The stones of Coventry with spring"
http://allpoetry.com/poem/8501919-Nicotine-by-Ezra_Pound

Pound's Crazy Quotes

Pound is a freak, his morals now adays are looked upon as a crazy person. He was also an imagist. Which means he was very visual and discriptional when he wrote. Imagist were people who wrote peoms in free-verse style, and did a lot of description and used words as visual description. These quotes, to me, jumped out and made me want to share them. These describe him and the way her thought.

Ezra's Cause of Writing

Ezra was a fascist, and got arrested for his broadcasting propoganda on the United States radio. He was sent to a crazy person hospital, because he was declare mentally ill. Those events right there most-likely had a huge impact on the way he wrote. I mean for crying out loud he is a crazy person. Mr. Pound also cheated on his wife, with his own nanny. When the nanny told the wife, she left him and went to Egypt. When she arrived back with Ezra, she was pregnant herself. This dude didn't have the greatest life, dont you think. His children lived very different lives, in which the daughter was brought up poor and a church girl, while his son was attending a boarding school. Although all this negative stuff happened, some good things happened to Pound as well. He recieved a doctorate from Hamilton College, which following after went back to Italy to write in the Italian Newspaper. Guess what his post was, "The Jews, Disease Incarnate." He signed the letter he wrote to James Laughlin "Heil Hitler." After the war broke out, he would write campaigns complaing about the United States, and how they need to keep out of this war. All these events HAD to have influenced his writing. This guy is crazy!!!

I Am disection

The I Am statements i have chosen for Ezra Pound, was kind of a filler post. I didnt really know how to go about this project, so i just picked 5 simple sentences that sort of explained my auther. Some of those sentences really do explain his life, some of them are just like ehh, whatever. My sentence about his wife and the nanny, that really does have to do a lot about this guy's life. He wasn't an "amazing" person. That sentence supports my hypothesis about Mr. Pound. This dude was kind of a weird ass man. He was a fascist and an imagist, kind of strange.

Maplan

My plan is to do what someone had mentioned earlier in class today. They had said that they wanted to do a scavenger hunt within the blog. i kind of want to remix that and do it throughout the interent. I really dont know how, but it does sound interesting and different and would helo people learn more about my author than just reading a boring old essay. If i dont decide to do that, i will probably do like a website or a facebook page. i do, no matter what, want to include pictures and music to my project. Just because visuals and audio examples help me learn better than just reading something. I know that i am not the only one that thinks that way, so i want to do it the way that i would want to learn about something. I feel like i could have a lot of fun with this project, the only thing that is im my way is time. I do want to have more time on this, just so i could do a really good job on it. hopefully i am not the only one that feels like this, just so majority rules in my favor. FINGERS CROSSED

Alternative Vocab Remix (SEE what i did there)

okay, since i didnt get a chance to do my remix that i had planned on, i picked an alternative solution. I was going to do it with one of my friends Charlie. She used to be an acquaintance of mine, but now we are slowly becoming friends. One defect to my situation is the fact that i have been so busy this entire weekend. From finishing up all my missing assignments, to cleaning my house and room; my mom says i have been living like a savage beast for the past month, i have had such a chronic agenda. To keep my sanity, i actually started back up my business of making hair bows and shorts. you should check it out! Anyways, i had such great remorse for blowing her off, and blowing Dr. Preston off for not doing my vocab remix. My implication to Dr. P was that i would have done this remix a couple weeks ago, and i never got to it. I really dont want to spoil my remix, and i dont want anyone to take my idea, but i will say this idea has exploded and its a great phenomenon in our generation right now. I will gives hints however, my remix has no sentimental value to it. Pardon the fact that it IS from two very popular tv/movies!(; The morality of my remix, that will possible happen one day is very unique, i think. Hopefully you will like it, but I THINK its worth the wait.

See what i did there...AGAIN!

YEAH BUDDY!!!

YESS!!! i am officially caught up with all my missing work on the blog Dr. P! and let me tell you, it feels pretty amazing, considering i would normally be in class right now if it was a teacher's day. (: ah! now all i have to do is my remix for the vocab, and i think you will really like it...

Josie College

I AM SO EXCITED FOR COLLEGE. Believe it of not my number one choice is UCLA. yes i know i do not have the grades for it right now. But i will, before i die, be a student at the University of California Las Angeles. Ever since i was a child i have fallen in love with every aspect of the college. During my childhood i spent a lot of time in their hospital with my uncle. Since i was only a few years old, i had admired the nurses, doctors, students, their cafeteria! About the age of 7 or 8, I had made up my mind in being a Pediatric Surgeon at the Mattel's Children's Hospital located at UCLA's campus. It's my DREAM to work their, maybe side by side the doctors i have admired year after year. I could go on and on about this, for and hours and hours on end. I plan on going to a different university for my general ed, possibly going on a cheer scholarship  or going to a community college and transferring later on. Once i start studying in the "medical" field, i will have no time for anything but school. I want to keep all my options open though, just in case one plan fails, i have plenty more. Im going to end this blog post because i can seriously talk about this FOREVER!!!!!

I Am Ezra Pound

I am an only child of Homer Loomis Pound and Isabel Weston.
I am a spouse to Dorothy Shakespear.
I am a father to my daughter whose mother is not my wife. Her mother is my peasant, Olga Rudge. When Olga told Dorothy about my daughter, she left to Egypt and came back pregnant herself.
I am the father of a son as well, who grew up with his grandmother until old enough to go to boarding school.
I am the father of two children who grew up two very different childhoods.

Map 1: Introducing Ezra Pound

Ezra had a GREAT mustache, very creepy looking.
Ezra was an only child , and his grandparents were immigrants from England in the 17th centruy.
Ezra met Hilda Doolittle at the University of Pennsylvania. (she was my second choice)
Ezra returned to England and was an AMERICAN tour guide for quick money (kind of ironic)
Ezra SUPPORTED ADOLF HITLER and was incarcerated.

Applied Modernism

Fahrenheit 451 is a modernist work because...? For many reasons! Modern or modernism doesn't necessarily mean at this moment, right now. Modernism doesn't really mean modern at all if you look at it a certain way. My opinion, Fahrenheit 451 definitely is modernist work. Many many times in this novel Mr. Bradbury talks about the future. What the future will hold, what technological ideas will surface, everything about the future without us even noticing. Modernism is going outside of the box. Kind of like transcendentalism. This is definitely what Bradbury did. Not only did his writing go outside the norm with his ideas and creations, but also the character Guy Montag did as well. He kept books in secret, which was especially out of the normal because he was a fireman who burnt houses down that possessed them. Throughout this novel, there are many examples of modernism, finding them on your own is the challenge.

Modernism Writing

My writing has changed so much in the past five years. I have grown up dramatically, learned many more sophisticated words, and realized that you are being judged in this world everyday. Everything you do, everything you say, everything is being judged. In the past five years; we have gotten a new president, captured and killed the most wanted man in the world, new technology has come about. So many changes are happening in this world. Everyday things are changing, so many aspects of this world are modernizing, and to ask what has happened in the past five? That's a huge spectrum to go off of. My writing, .my demeanor  everything has changed subconsciously.

Modernist Artist I Chose

I chose Ezra Pound. That name was the name of the teacher in Pretty Little Liars. Its stopd out tome right away, so i chose it. But, im not going to look over that name, there is a reason the name Ezra was chosen as an english teacher, and i want to know what the reason was.

I Am Here

This class is honestly the highlight of my day. I feel as if this class is where i try the hardest and i can be heard. My smart goal i havent been keeping up on it, like i think i should be. It is so hard doing extra when i can barely get by on the homework assigned. I dont remember what the senior project is, is that the "Sphynx Says Write," thing? i asked a girl but i didnt give her a prompt, i forgot that step, so it was kind of like a fail. But other than that i honestly think i have done so good in this class. i try so hard to get all the assignments done and in on time. i really am proud of myself to say that i read the 451 book completely. I NEVER READ, EVER, and to say that i did is a real accomplishment for me.

Essay Post Game Analysis

I think i rocked the essay on Wednesday. I thought i answered the questions properly and thoroughly, because i read the book and because i understood the prompt. Do i think i could have done something better? yeah probably. you can always improve. Maybe it could have been a little more professional. But other than that i thought i did quite well on  it. i would give myself an A honestly. but i know i will get a B because i always do

Parlor Poetry

Montag chose that poem to have a deep meaning. He wants to prove to these women, that they do have feelings, and they do care but the society they live in is making them hide their emotions. The world they live in is corrupting them to think all the same, to almost be like robots and do what is told and nothing more. The poem i chose was the Two Roads poem by Frost. I am honestly in love with that poem, 1, and 2 because its similar to Montag's situation. In a way it has almost the same meaning in it as Montag and Faber and the women in the Burning House did. Being different is not a bad thing, and taking a different path as other people many not look okay, but it truely is. I dont know how to link that poem to my blog though, but i know almost everyone knows what poem i am talking about.

Okay, so I think I'm going to be posting on here a lot more now. Not just academic-school related posts, but actually post that I feel like I want to share with the world. Like I said, I will be posting fun medical facts on here, that will help me with my medical knowledge for college. I know not a lot of people follow this blog, or me in general, but if you do can, you please comment so I know I'm getting views. Or leave some sort of feedback that can help me in the future. Thanks!

-These women hate their children apparently
-Mrs. Phelps doesnt have kids, doesnt want them, thinks theyre devilish
-Montag cracks. He cant stand the women's discussions, and goes on a screaming tangent and brings up the war by mistake
-Montag is caught in a pickle, he pretty much bles his cover with the ladies and doesnt know what to do.
-Mildred saves Montag and makes up some excuse for why hes acting this way
-She tells the ladies firemen bring a book home once a year to reminess on how dumb people were back then.
-Montag reads a little poetry from the book, and the women start to cry
-They dont know why theyre crying, they cant explain it.
-Mrs. Phelps gets pissed.
-She goes on to say she knew they would cry. Poetry brings people to do bad things, like suicide
-Montag yells at Mrs. Phelps.
-Hes annoyed of her and kicks her out of his house
-Montag returned to fire station and gave Beatty the book. Beatty threw the book in the trash and sked if Montag wanted to play poker

The Peeved Pedestrian

In my opinion, Bradbury wrote this novel to inform. Not only did he predict the future, and describe what he thought would be in the world, but also to inform people what was happening in the world then. By discussing the book in class, and with my table group, the way he explains things and gives us little details in the book is the reason why i came to this conclusion. He foreshadows a lot in this story, along with indirect characterization as well as direct characterization.

Im a Poet and I Know It

                                                    My Sponge

Sometimes she wonders why?
Physically she knows he's not real
Or is he?
Not everyone sees him like she sees him
Girls think she's an attention seeker
Even guys think she is weird sometimes
But she really doesn't care
Often she feels as if he is a safe haven
Better yet, a way to, get away

Seeing him everyday makes her happy
Quiet underscribable
Unique much? Yeah she's unique, she's obsessed with a sponge damnit
Although, he isnt just a sponge, he is more of an idea
Rare idea yes, but an idea none the less. An idea that interests her
Even though he is a cartoon, he makes her feel like a kid
Parents dont understand the pressures they can apply to their kid/s
And sometimes its overwhelming, and at times unbearable
Not everyone understands, and that's okay
Thats fine with her, she understands her, i understand her
Spongebob. Yeah, she loves Spongebob, thats her sponge. Everyone has one, who's yours?

Theme for English 3

My school experimence is not the same as the narrators, i think. I mean im not colored so i cant really relate to him in that way. But i do kind of relate to him in the way that he doesnt feel that his instructor isnt apart of him. I do feel like that with some of my teachers. I do believe though that i am the person my teachers think i am. Some of my teachers think of me different than others, i can tell. But Dr. Preston, i hope thinks of me as i think he does. If that makes sense. Yes i can be myself, but sometimes i need to check my personality. Because when im with certain people they inderstand my jokes, when people at my school sometimes do not. Other than that im pretty much myself no matter where i go. I mean my main interests are competitive cheer, and medicine. I dont think cheer can really relate to school that mich, but medicine im sure can. I do want to keep some things private when im at school. I dont like to share some of my workout stuff and health stuf. I want to keep it private so when my results come through, people are suprised. If you know what i mean. I do hve that type of personality where i sometimes have to be the boss , but for the most part im kind of neutral. In projects and group activities i like to be in charge, just so i know it will be done properly. But other than that im kind of neutral

Spring Semester: Plan 1

My plan for this semester does not really have anything to do with English class per-say. Yet it has everything to do with it at the same time. My plan and goal is to, every week research a new fact about the human body. Whether it has to do with the brain, or the bones, or your bloodstream. Every week i want to memorize my fact, and have it down pat. That way, by the end of the semester, i will have learned so much about medicine, by just a simple little memorization once a week. The way this can help me in English, is it can help me with my memorization skills. Since, of course, Dr. Preston makes us memorize poems all the time, this is perfect for his class.

Spring Post: Music As Literature

In my opinion, yes. we can consider music as literature. Literature to me is words, words that have some sort of message or meaning. Just because music has another element to the meaning, doesn't mean it is any less or even not considered Literature. if anything, the noise, or background tunes is an advantage. The difference between music elements and novels, poems and books etc. is not really much at all. They all have meaning, lessons, stories, etc. The only difference, for me, is that music has the background noise, the beat behind it.
